Faculty and students gathered for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the colonnade lawn. This is an annual tradition that brings everyone together to celebrate and enjoy some fun festive activities like caroling and the signing of the Yule log.
Evergreen plants have long been used to celebrate the winter time holidays. Evergreens remind us of the green leaves of spring and offers hope during a long winter. For this holiday season, Grier students created wreaths and beautiful mini holiday trees from natural and man-made materials.
Some Grier Riders and coaches spent a weekend away from Grier, in Kentucky, showing at the National Horse Show 3'3" Equitation Championship. It was a first time experience for our girls visiting and competing at the world famous Kentucky Horse Park. Sophie, Lauren, and Maggie gave it their all at the inaugural NHS Equitation Championship while spending time touring the museums on the showground. Congratulations to these girls on an excellent end to their show season!
Members of Grier’s Knitting Club decided to make a blanket to benefit charity. It was Heather P. (’18) who proposed the idea of mitered squares to the club. Each knitter can create a 7”x7” mitered square, and then these squares can be sewn together into a blanket. The club plans to sell raffle tickets for the finished blanket, with proceeds benefiting a charity yet to be determined.
'Tis the season for giving! The EGG Holiday Donation Drive collected items to donate to local needy. Students brough items to their homerooms or vouchered up to $10 dollars. The homerooms competed against each other for a FREE Panera or Mamie’s breakfast!
Midterm exams wrapped up this week. Students gathered to study and socialize before bidding each other farewell for the winter break. On the last day of exams, big white snowflakes fell from the sky, signaling the start of winter break. Classes resume on Monday, January 8th!
The Winter Concert occurred on the last day of classes before Grier's Winter Break begins, so our musicians and vocalists used this opportunity not only to feature their talents, but to also get the audience into the holiday spirit with a few Christmas pieces.
Congratulations to the Varsity Hunt seat Team on another successful weekend of showing. The girls worked hard all weekend to earn top honors, including High Point High School Team on Saturday and Sunday as well as Reserve High Point Middle School team on Sunday.
The winter holidays tend to be busy for most of us, but some Grier NHS members took time recently to lend a hand at the local Tyrone-Snyder Public Library. During a Library Open House event, Grier NHS members led a crafting station for children where they could make ugly sweater ornaments. NHS members also helped the little kids decorate sugar cookies with colorful frosting and candy decorations. The students and NHS advisor Mrs. Michele Thibodeau enjoyed spreading holiday cheer to the children of Grier's local community.
On Wednesday evening, the students in Vocal Director Mrs. Ginger Reinhardt's Musical Theatre classes performed in a Musical Theatre Showcase event. Through a wide variety of solos and choreographed group numbers, the students entertained the audience.
The students have been practicing throughout the semester and many will audition for roles in the spring musical directed by Mrs. Reinhardt. Many of these students also take private voice lessons from Mrs. Reinhardt, Mrs. Silliker, and Mrs. Hanlon.
For the third consecutive year, Grier's National Honor Society chapter sponsored a school-wide Secret Santa gift exchange program. To foster a sense of togetherness during the holiday season, NHS invited students, teachers, and staff members to participate in spreading the cheer of the season.
Grier dancers graced the stage before a packed audience of students, teachers, friends, and family on Friday's annual Winter Dance Performance. This program was an opportunity for the dancers to demonstrate routines and skills they have been developing throughout the fall semester with their dance instructors at Grier and the guest artists who have offered master classes during the semster.
Le Dîner en Blanc is an annual event that originated in Paris and now takes place in numerous cities throughout the world. Participants are asked to dress all in white and arrive with picnic style food at a secret location that is only disclosed shortly before the diner takes place.
French students at Grier reenacted this event on campus by dressing in white, inviting their friends, and helping to set up tables and chairs in the Grier living room. Madame Pope brought French style food and drinks and the students had a wonderful time socializing, speaking French, and learning about this Parisian custom. At the end of the night, students pitched in to clean up the picnic materials and, in true Dîner en Blanc fashion, disappear without a trace.
Students in Grier's Empowering Girls Globally (EGG) Club attended a United Nations Organization Girl Up Regional Summit in Philadelphia. Grier's own Annie G. helped organize the event that aimed to build awareness of issues facing girls internationally and provide attendees with the tools and knowledge to lead the charge. The event was punctuated with keynote speakers and presentors including Representatives from the Pennsylvania State House, the producer of the political comedy show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, women of STEM, and many more!

Audiences enjoyed Grier School's production of The Bad Seed, a chilling story of a seemingly perfect little girl in a small Southern town. The acclaimed play was written in 1954 by Maxwell Anderson, based on a novel by William March and was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film.

Students, faculty, and staff got into the holiday spirit for the annual Grier Thanksgiving Luncheon. On this day, the whole Grier community dresses up to enjoy a formal luncheon featuring Thanksgiving favorites, such as turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
Grier students and faculty enjoyed a fun-filled spirit week sponsored by Student Council. Each day of the week featured a special dress-up day and a special silly competition after school.
Each year, Grier’s Vocal Music Department competes in the National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS) Student Auditions. This year, Riley F., Linden M., Mary D., Erzsebet M., and Katie S. competed in the Allegheny Mountain Chapter Student Auditions at Gettsyburg College.
Under the direction of Jocelyn Hrzic, Grier School’s Dance Department recently hosted the annual Grier Gala, and event that brings nationally-renowned dance instructors and choreographers to Grier to teach master class workshops and perform on the Grier stage.
Congratulations to the Varsity Western Team on an amazing first weekend of showing! The weekend kicked off Saturday with the high school being awarded Reserve Champion High Point Team and the Middle School was Champion High Point Team. On Sunday, the high school team was awarded Reserve Champion High Point Team and the Middle School was Champion High Point team.
There is a very tiny room above the Grier School auditorium, visible only through an open archway overlooking the performance space. This room is known as the Crow’s Nest, and it is accessed through a suitably tiny door nestled beside a dormitory staircase. Not just anybody is allowed in the Crow’s Nest, but students in Recording Technology Class are among the few, privileged souls allowed entry.
Recently, Grier riders competed at the ASPCA Maclay Regionals in Kentucky this past week, while many others competed in the Huntseat IEA Zone 2 competition hosted by Halfmoon Valley during the weekend. Congratulations to the varsity hunt seat riding team on an excellent show!

Each year, Grier’s Vocal Music Department competes in the National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS) Student Auditions. Last year, Riley F. competed in the Allegheny Mountain Chapter Student Auditions and secured a second place win. Riley competed against local men and women in 9th and 10th grade in the Lower High School Music Theater category, where she gave an 8-10 minute performance featuring the pieces Falling in Love with Love, On Monday, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. This year, as a junior, Riley continues to study music at Grier. She is a member of the Concert Choir, Select Choir, and Grier's Rock Band.
Grier's Librarian Mrs. Rebecca Woolfrey often partners with classroom teachers to offer library research instruction to classes when teachers assign research papers or projects. She also develops a variety of enrichment activities which introduce students to additional information literacy topics. When she had the opportunity to develop a lesson very close to Halloween, Mrs. Woolfrey decided to go a somewhat spooky route and invited the students in Learning Skills to join her.
Grier celebrated Halloween on Friday with costume contests, a bonfire, trick-or-treating, and a school dance. During the school day, students and teachers dressed up in costumes that ranged from the beautiful, the silly, and the frightening. Some classes used the Lab Days prior to Grier's Halloween celebration to carve jack-o-lanterns that decorated the Colonnade. Many students and teachers had fun assembling group costumes. Halloween classics like ghosts, vampires, and witches wandered the school halls along with characters from current pop culture.
This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Grier Sophomore Class organized a charity fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Fund. Students, faculty, and administrators were invited to participate in the event. Everyone was encouraged to wear pink, the color associated with Breast Cancer awareness. For a $1 contribution, students could wear PJs and teachers could wear jeans. The Sophomore class nearly tripled the amount they collected last year! They will be donating over $311.
Since Lab Days were originally designed with science labs in mind, the Science Department certainly seizes these regular opportunities to offer intriguing lab experiments and authentic learning, both in and out of the classroom setting.
Lab Days are excellent opportunities for special projects and learning experiences in the classrooms. Lab Days double the length of class periods and span two academic days each marking period. These days earned their moniker because they originally allowed science classes to complete the longer format lab experiments. While the Science Department certainly continues to use the days for this purpose, other departments and teachers use these days in a variety of ways.
Earlier this month, Grier hosted their first Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) competition. This two-day event resulted in many individual wins and an overall team win for Grier.

This month, Grier students volunteered their time at the Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind’s Fall Fun Day. The event promoted awareness of visual impairments in a fun, family atmosphere that featured festive fall-themed games, crafts, and other activities.
On Sunday, October 15th, NHS hosted a Fun Run 5k on the Grier campus. NHS invited all members of the Grier community (including all Parents Weekend visitors!) to participate. The run was a great success, with 71 participants. Jefferson H., younger brother of Grier senior Jaden H., was the first place runner. Grier senior Nora V. came in second place.
Last Saturday, a group of students rose early in the morning to depart with History teacher, Mrs. Keri Salyards on a coach bus to Gettsyburg, Pennsylvania. When the students and chaperones arrived at Gettysburg National Military Park, an engaging tour guide brought Civil War history to life.
Every year Grier invites the families of Grier students to campus for a special Parents Weekend. Over the course of the weekend, parents, grandparents, siblings, and guardians have the opportunity to see the Grier Girl in her element and learn about life at Grier.
This week, Grier celebrated International Day of the Girl. This day is sanctioned by the United Nations and is observed around the world. It brings attention to issues of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide. Grier’s Empowering Girls Globally (EGG) club led the celebration by selling plain white t-shirts and hosting a t-shirt designing session during Extra Help.
Grier’s Varsity Soccer team is looking strong! This group of wonderful and hard-working young women is coached by Grier math teacher Mrs. Jenn Payne. The soccer team is one of Grier’s biggest teams, with a total of twenty-three students, many of whom are new to Grier.
Members of Grier's Board of Trustees visited campus last weekend for their annual Fall meeting. The board members enjoyed touring Grier's campus, visiting with administrators, teachers, and students. After classes on Friday afternoon, the Music and Dance department treated the members of the board to performances. It was a great opportunity for our students to rehearse the performances they will be giving during the upcoming Parents Weekend.
The reading program One School, One Story challenges anybody and everybody that is part of the Grier community to read the same book and to participate in activities and discussions throughout the year. For the 2017-2018 School Year, the selected title is Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Grier is happy to announce the addition of a new varsity sport to its fall line-up. For the first time ever, Grier has a Cross Country team. Under the leadership of Coach Leen, the fast Foxes will compete against three District 6 schools during the 2017 Season.
Grier is so proud to announce that our revered Head of School Gina Borst recently received a prestigious award: The ATHENA Leadership Award. The award is bestowed by ATHENA International, a non-profit organization that seeks to support, develop and honor women leaders. The ATHENA Leadership Award’s rich history, international scope, and focus on mentorship distinguish it as one of the most prestigious leadership awards one can receive.
The Grier Lady Foxes Varsity Volleyball team is off to a terrific season facing opponents all throughout the central Pennsylvania region. So far, the Foxes have seen both wins and losses, but have looked strong overall and have an exciting line-up of games still to come.
Students in Ms. Julie Piotti's Art History classes have been learning about Greco-Roman art and recently increased their understanding of the clothing worn by women during this era by donning costumes that reflect those worn by subjects in the artwork the students have been studying in Ms. Piotti's class.
Under the leadership of Jocelyn Hrzic, Grier School’s Dance Department is excited to announce the 2017 Grier Gala. The Grier Gala is an annual event that brings master dance instructors to Grier and culminates in two nights of performances by professional dance companies and students of dance.
Recently, Grier's Science Department invited a very special guest for a return visit to campus. Striker, a 16 year-old saker falcon from the Middle East, stopped by for our Grier students to see in person during Extra Help. Students had the opportunity to see the falcon up close. Seventh grade students Grace A. and Janet S. each allowed Striker to perch on their arms for a while.
On Wednesday, students at Grier met with their fellow grade-level peers for the first class meetings of the school year. Faculty members facilitated the meetings where students had the opportunity to run for a class office. Positions varied by grade, but included President, Vice President, Secretary,Treasurer, and Student Council Representative. After candidates delivered short speeches, faculty advisors for each class tallied the secret votes to declare winners.
The Pennsylvania Young Readerss Choice Awards (PAYRCA) Program is an annual statewide program that gives students the opportunity to vote for their favorite authors. At Grier, students who participate in the program receive Grier Bucks and chances to win prizes throughout the school year.
To participate, students sign-up in the library between September and February and read titles from the list of fifteen nominees. Copies of the books are available through the library. Grier students vote before Spring Break and the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association declares winners in May.
This year, the National Merit® Scholarship Program commended five Grier students. Seniors Mary D., Jaden H., Nora V., Lilian Z., and Emily C. received the commendations in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Mrs. Borst recently recognized these students before their peers at a School Assembly.
NHS is hosting a 5K walk/run on the Sunday of Parents Weekend. All members of the Grier community (including all Parents Weekend visitors!) are welcome to participate. All proceeds from this event will go to support victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Please find more information below.
The 2017 Tennis team already has two matches under their belt. On Wednesday, the Foxes faced Central High School of Spring Cove School District in Martinsburg and started their season with a 5-2 win. Thursday, the team faced Mercersberg Academy with wins by the number one singles player and doubles team.
Recently, Grier Varsity Hunt Seat riders and instructors traveled to the HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York, to compete in the Marshall and Sterling League National Finals. Maggie F., Sophie K., Linnea K., Lauren H., Grace W., Lindsay S., and Courtney M. competed in this national final, the first of many more to come this season.
Grier’s Varsity Tennis Player Kristen L. returns to Grier for the 2017 season after an amazing summer of several United States Tennis Association Tournaments wins in the Middle States Division. Merely curious to see how she compared to her peers, Kristen’s parents agreed to allow her to compete in several tournaments. They were very pleasantly surprised when she won every tournament that she entered!
Students and their parents arrived last week to Grier for Opening Weekend, a four-day event leading up to the start of the new school year. During Opening, Grier welcomed new and returning students and hosted a weekend of fun festivities that included a Carnival on the Colonnade and a field trip to a local amusement park.
As many Grier students arrived to campus for Opening events, some Grier riders were in Raleigh, NC, competing in the 2017 Sport Horse Nationals Arabian & Half Arabian Championship Show where Mallory E. and her Arabian horse Trueblue Goldmine won the National Champion title in Show Hack Amature to Ride.
Over the summer, the National Dance Foundation of Bermuda awarded eight of the nation's most talented dancers with scholarships. Of those eight, two are Grier alumnae Jada P. '15 and Mikayla W. '17, and one, Rhianna E. '21, begins her education at Grier this year.
Along with the Great American Eclipse, many may remember the summer of 2017 for the Kindness Rocks trend that gained momentum in towns and regions all across the country. During one Enrichment Hour of the International Student Orientation Program this August, Grier's Librarian and Website Manager, Mrs. Rebecca Woolfrey, took a break from reading and technology to bring the rock-painting craze right to Grier.
Grier offers both recreational and competitive riding. Many of our riders compete in a variety of circuits and shows during the school year and throughout the summer. Here are just a few recent achievements Grier Stables shared:
Students and teachers purchased handmade ceramic soup bowls at the Bowl-n-Soup sale in May during lunch to raise money for the Grier Community Fund. Ceremaics teacher Mrs. Heidi Zimbler organized the annual event, which featured not only her own pieces, but also the works of her students.
The Grier Faculty members look forward to students' return at the start of the school year for many reasons that include hearing all about how the students spent their summers. Many students spend time with family and friends, travel, attend camps, work summer jobs, volunteer, and attend special educational programs, like our Cas C.
Rising Grier Senior Cas shares with us her experience with the Junior Statesmen of American Georgetown Summer School where she had the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of constitutional law, meet high-ranking government personnel, and make some great friendships.
Upon graduation, Grier's Shannon L. '17, presented her teachers with gifts they will treasure for a long time. With a mix of artistic talent and clever humor, Shannan rendered each of her teachers as a super hero, including a few family portraits. Grier teachers are motivated to offer their best to foster academic and emotional growth in their students, but gifts like these along with notes and words of thanks, show the positive impact Grier faculty members have on the lives of their students.
For the Grier Giving Project, homerooms compete to collect the most items for a deserving local charity. Volunteers help collect items from the homerooms, pack the donations, and deliver them to the local community. Recently, for a Grier Gives Back giving project led by the Junior Class, homerooms competed to collect books for a local charity serving children and teens.
Thanks to the support of a generous donor, the Learning Skills facilities, a part of Grier's multi-faceted Academic Support program, recently received an update designed to increase student motivation and academic performance.
The camp that operates at Grier during the summer months welcomed a new batch of campers to their second session. Some first session campers are staying for the second three-week session, as well, and these returning girls who know their way around will be great leaders to campers just joining the fun.
This spring at Grier, duck eggs hatched into fluffy baby ducklings. Students in Mrs. Christine Fernandes' 7th grade Life Sciences class will observe and care for the ducklings for two weeks before the ducklings find permanent homes at local farms.
At the 12th Annual ISAAC Awards results show and ceremony, Grier students took home six awards and performed a number from the Grier Spring Musical, Sister Act. Over twenty high schools in Central Pennsylvania participated in the two-night ISAAC Awards. Grier's production received 10 nominations in seven categories for the Altoona Community Theatre's (ACT) 12th Annual Isaacs Awards, which recognize excellence in high school musical theatre. Musical Director Mrs. Ginger Reinhardt also presented Grier's own award for MVP to Amy Y.
Grier graduates often make a visit back to Grier after their college semesters wrap up, stopping by in May to say hello to former teachers and friends. Some of Grier's alumnae even decide to spend their summers at Grier, working as Counselors-in-Training at the Grier Summer camp that operates on the Grier Campus. For Summer 2017, recent alumnae Shannon B. '17, Emily-Margaret C. '16, and Kylee S. '16 will be returning to Grier as summer CITs. They will join the counseling and teaching staff, which includes Director Mrs. Jennifer Pepperman and teachers Ms. Kitty Moyer, Mr. Arron Ort, and Mrs. Christine Fernandes.
While Grier School is out of session for the summer, campers from near and far come to Grier campus to participate in Grier Summer, an all-girls camp founded in 1975. At Grier Summer, campers ages 7-17 can participate in art, musical theatre, dance, and riding along with fun activities like swimming, games, and of course, making s'mores!
Grier Physics teacher, Mrs. Kelly Forest, spent the 2016-2017 school year away from Grier, on a research sabbatical with her family. During her time away, Mrs. Forest was able to visit Paris, France, New Zealand, and Australia. From the photos she shared, Mrs. Forest must have loved every minute of the experience! Although she will miss the incredible opportunity she had to explore these amazing places and make new friends, Mrs. Forest is looking forward to returning to the classroom for Fall 2017.
Grier Alumnae and their families returned to Grier this weekend for an All-Class Alumnae Reunion organized by Grier's Director of Development, Mrs. Harriet Grier, and Grier Alumnae Coordinator, Mrs. Beverly Galloway. Roughly 120 alumnae from over seven decades of graduating classes and mulitple states converged upon the forested hills of Grier campus for a weekend full of fun, friendship, and reminiscing.
Nine Grier students competed alongside students from across the state of Pennsylvania at the PJAS State Competition May 14-16th at Penn State's main campus in State College. Our Grier students took home seven first-place awards!
Students in Mrs. Heidi Zimbler's Hand Building Pottery class used the double length periods during the last Lab Days of the 2016-2017 school year to create unique Pueblo-style pieces. To do this, the students built a primative style outdoor pit kiln near the Grier upper fields.
Following a half day of classes, students and teachers gathered at the Head of School's house for a picnic luncheon followed by a special presentation. Mrs. Borst "gazed into the future" and made predictions for Grier's senior class, students presented the yearbook dedication, and Ms. Cari Crago shared a moving story of how small kindnesses make big differences.
Seniors and their parents enjoyed a weekend of Graduation festivities. The events included a Graduation Dinner held in the Gymnasium on Friday night. This was followed by a concert and dance showcase, a final opportunity for the seniors to perform as Grier students. Time time-honored tradition of Candlelight Ceremony followed, with students gathering in the courtyard by candlelight.
During a special all-school assembly, department heads and teachers proudly presented outstanding academic achievement awards to underclass students. The award winners were selected by faculty members from the departments of: English, History, Math, Modern Languages, and Science for students in grades 9, 10, and 11.
In a special all-school assembly on Tuesday, May 23rd, the Grier chapter of the National Honor Society inducted fourteen new members. These individuals exemplified the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Students taking voice and music lessons performed individual recitals in Grier's Music Building before a live audience of fellow classmates and teachers. These performances demonstrated the progress and skill refinement made throughout the course of the academic year.
The Grier School Prom was held on Satruday, May 20 at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Boys traveled from Kiski and Carson Long to join our students in the festivities. The theme was "Grecian Gala," and under a canopy of lights and amidst Mediterranean decor, the Grier girls and their dates danced the night away.
Grier's National Honor Society (NHS) organized a school-wide Capture the Flag event to raise funds for charity. Four teams competed to capture the well-guarded flag of another team.
This past Saturday the Empowering Girls Globally (EGG) and the Running Club teamed up to participate in the Global 5K, a challenge by the United Nations' foundation Girl Up, which tasks girls to run 3.1 miles to support girls’ empowerment in Guatemala. Girl Up stands for education for girls all over the world and brings girls all over the world together to achieve its goals.
History teacher and knitting club advisor, Mrs. Abby Curtis, recently brought her spinning wheel to her Grier classroom to demonstrate the art of spinning wool fiber into yarn. During the Extra Help period, Mrs. Curtis demonstrated how to prepare the fibers and spin them with the wheel.
Recently, some Grier students donned waterproof gear and waded into the Little Juniata River, located just across the road from Grier. Although the sun was shining, the temperature of the stream was chilly, and the students weren't there to take a dip or fly fish. Instead, the students were taking samples and assessing the stream's health as part of a lab in Dr. Burke's AP Biology class. The students tested pH levels, nitrate levels, and dissolved oxygen levels to determine the health of Little Juniata. The results of the assessment: The Little Juniata is healthy, but cold! Brrr!
In addition to the regular performances in Grier's own Dance Building, Grier Dancers have opportunities to participate in showcases and competitions in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and New York. The Koresh Artist Showcase was one of these events that allowed our dancers the opportunity to perform onstage with over a dozen other dance companies.
Students in Mrs. Fernandes' 7th grade Life Sciences class volunteered with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission recently to help stock the local waterways. The students helped the workers stock a few thousand fish along Bald Eagle Creek. Mrs. Fernandes said the fish were mainly very large, lively adult rainbow trout.
Grier girls and English Department Head, Ms. Kara Lawler, packed the Grier Coffee Barn on Sunday for a creative writing workshop led by author and American Ballet Theatre (ABT®) Certified dance instructor, Renee Nicholson. This event was a continuation of Grier's Writer's Series, an English Department initiative to expose Grier students to female writers.
On a beautiful spring Tuesday, May 9th, fourteen Grier students competed against other area high schools in an Envirothon event hosted by Juniata College at the Raystown Lake Field Station on Raystown Lake in Huntingdon Country, Pennsylvania. Grier teams took 4th and 5th place. Way to go!
As the final step of their participation in Pennsylvania's Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program, Grier seventh grade students visited McClaine Run in Barree, PA where they released twenty-six brook baby trout, or fingerlings, that they had raised from eggs.
Grier is so excited to announce that our spring musical received multiple nominations for the Altoona Community Theatre's (ACT) 12th Annual Isaacs Awards, which recognize excellence in high school musical theatre. For the spring musical Sister Act, Grier received ten nominations across seven different categories.
Congratulations to the Varsity Hunt Seat riders and rec riders who competed at the Grier School Spring rated shows this past weekend! Lauren H. won multiple medals both days including the NCEA Jr Medal, Gittings, and the M & S Junior/Amateur Horsemanship Medal.
Each year, students enrolled in Dr. Nancy Burke's Honors Biology classes complete a long-term research project. These students have the option to present at the Region 6 Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science's Regional Competition. This year's competition was held at Penn State Altoona on March 4, 2017.
After weeks of preparation, set-building, costume fittings, and rehearsals to learn lines, lyrics, and choreography, Grier's musical Sister Act hit the stage this weekend for its two night run before packed audiences of classmates, teachers, parents, and friends.
Members of Grier's Running Club participated in the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA's Bud Shuster Run for your Life Race Saturday, April 22nd. Grier students Tess M., Nora V., Maria L., Ngan N., and Running Club advisor Ms. Taylor Leen ran the unique two-mile race up the major roadway, Route 36.
Thanks to one of our Grier parents, we have some great shots of students rehearsing for the Grier Musical Sister Act. These images capture some behind-the-scenes looks as the performers learn their blocking and choreography. The performs also begin rehearsing in their costumes; an critical step because moving in a nun's habit is much different than moving in the usual athletic wear worn during rehearsal.
In celebration of Earth Day, on Saturday, April 22nd, Mrs. Brubaker and several Grier students joined other community volunteers in a work day at the Huntingdon Community Food Garden. Grier students helped to complete fencing, relocate the compost pile, mow grass, weed and edge the beds, and mulch the beds in this garden that helps feed Huntingdon county residents.
Another Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) season is in the books! This weekend, Lindsay S., a ninth grade student at Grier, competed at the IEA National Finals at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia.
Marine Biology students recently enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Wallops Island, Virginia, where they spent four days learning about coastal ecology.
Grier students and faculty enjoyed a fun-filled spirit week sponsored by Student Council. Each day of the week featured a special dress-up day and a special silly competition after school.

Sister Act is the feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film that has audiences jumping to their feet! Featuring original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors), this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Grier students who participated in varsity sports during the spring season enjoyed a banquet in their honor held at the Blairmont Country Club in Altoona. Sports represented during this banquet included: Archery, Basketball, Fencing, Riding, Soccer, Tennis, and Volleyball. During the banquet, coaches from each team presented awards.
Entomologist Hannah Stout, PhD. visited Grier to give a special presentation on the topic of honey bees and other interesting insects. Students gathered in Mrs. Kallie Brubaker's science classroom during extra help to learn about the intriguing insect world. Dr. Stout gave a presentation and invited students to examine a wide variety of insect specimins.
While it is widely known that reading and discussing literature can open minds and virtually transport students to different places and times, one usually doesn't expect to actually practice wilderness survival skills in class. However, ninth-grade students in Mr. Lang's English class had the opportunity to do just that!
Several students enjoyed attending a recital by Grier Music faculty member, Mrs. Amanda Silliker. Accompanied by concert pianist Svetlana Rodinova, Mrs. Silliker delivered a memorable mezzo-soprano vocal performance at the Bellefonte Historical Museum on Sunday afternoon.
April is National Poetry Month. In honor of this celebration, the library displays books of poetry, about writing poetry, and novels in verse. New this year, this library features a Poetry Project interactive felt board. Students can visit the library and manipulate the words on the board to make their own poems or modify an existing poem to make something new.
On Friday, the Grier community enjoyed a spectacular performance by our Grier dancers and choreographers. The audience enjoyed seeing nearly ninety Grier dancers perform twenty-five varied numbers that included solos, small groups, and large groups of ballet, jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, and hip-hop.
Grier Rock Band member, sophomore Emma H. had a case of laryngitis that prevented her from performing her own song, Heart Strings, during Rock Band's recent Rockfest concert. Fortunately, the students in Mr. Don Neumuller's Video Production and Recording Technology classes partnered to produce a video of Emma's rehearsal.
Recently, Grier musicians and vocalists treated the Grier community to the biggest concert of the year, with performances by the orchestra, string orchestra, jazz ensemble, flute choir, junior select singers, select singers and concert choir.
Following her performance at Line Mountain State Qualifying Shoot, Lauren S. moved on to compete in the Pennsylvania National Archery in Schools Program tournament at Penn State University. Despite the winter storm, Grier fans came out to support Lauren as she placed 33rd out of 150 female high school archers in the state of Pennsylvania. Way to go!
Recently, many Grier students had their first opportunity to see real pieces of the Moon. Earth Science teacher, Mrs. Christine Fernandes gave multiple presentations about the specimens which were collected from Apollo missions 14, 15, 16, and 17.
Grier Hunt Seat riders recently competed in Hunt Seat IEA Zone 2 Finals at the Buffalo Equestrian Center in Buffalo, New York, and returned victorious. The Grier School Varsity Western Team won Zone 2 Finals, which qualifies the team to compete at the 2017 IEA National Finals in Oklahoma. Grier School finished the season as Zone 2 Upper School Team Champion and Middle School Reserve Champion Team.
Grier Senior Bella N. is a rising star in the world of photography and is featured in Vogue magazine's 125th Anniversary Project American Women; a project with an aim to capture riveting and varied women across the nation. Bella contributed to this project by photographing female members of anabaptist communities in Pennsylvania.
On Sunday afternoon, Grier students enjoyed a taste of the world at a special event, the International Food Bazaar. Twelve student teams representing a variety of global cuisines planned, cooked, and served food to about 120 fellow students! The event was conceived and spearheaded by junior, Flora W.
Grier musicians and vocalists took to the Auditorium stage Friday evening for Grier's wildest music concert of the year: Rockfest! The student-faculty Rock Band performed over twenty new and classic pop and rock songs under the colorful lights of the Auditorium stage.
Recently, the Grier School Language Honor Society welcomed new members in an induction ceremony held in the Living Room during Extra Help period. New members included: Kami K., Linden M., Katie S., Cas C., Grace W., Michelle S., Jaden H., Heather P., and Rainie W.

Lee Peterson, instructor of Creative Writing and Women's Studies at Penn State, Altoona, came to Grier School's Coffee Barn on Sunday, February 26th, for a reading of her own poetry and to lead Grier students in a guided poetry workshop.
The extended class period time of Lab Days allowed the French language students of Madame Pope and Madame Shaffer to create the French culinary delight: crepes. Maple Forest, the on-campus residence of the Grier family, provided a fully-equipped kitchen and dining room for the students to prepare and enjoy their crepes.
Celebrating the end of the Grier Lady Foxes Basketball Team's amazing season, assistant coach Ms. Liz Wortman organized an after school exhibition game of student players versus faculty members. Learning Skills teacher and former basketball all-star Mrs. Shelly Davis refereed along with student Irina P. While officially, the faculty won the game, student players report the faculty's winning tactics were well outside the rulebook.
Seventh grade students in Mrs. Fernandes' Life Sciences classes participate in Pennsylvania's Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program that allows students to raise trouts from eggs to small trout that students will release into the Little Juniata River in May.
During the month of February, Grier's Art Department welcomed artist-in-residence, Felicia Frank. Frank worked with students in Grier's art classes to create mixed media artwork using acrylic paints, watercolor, and collage. These pieces culminated in a one-of-a-kind book greater than the sum of its parts.
Grier's Riding Director, Mrs. Chrystal Wood, invited sport psychologist and author Dr. Janet Sasson Edgette to host a clinic at Grier. Riders gathered after school on Friday, February 24th to learn how psychology affects their horse riding.
Grier's National Honor Society (NHS) is sponsoring a Teas/Tees for Bees fund raiser to raise money for the global hunger relief charity Heifer International through the sales of tea and t-shirts. This is a nod to NHS's previous cleverly-titled fund raisers "Totes for Goats," "Shirts for Sheep," "Tops for Crops," and "Pants for Plants."
As a project in Mr. Neumuller's Video Production class, freshman Abby T. filmed, edited, and produced a documentary of Alex Zak, the working artist who visited Grier the past fall.
In January, Grier hosted a school-wide Shakespeare Competition for students grades 9-12. On February 18th, our school winner, junior Grace W., competed against winners from other Central Pennsylvania Schools at Lock Haven University. Grace performed a sonnet and Lady McBeth's monologue.
Recently, the Grier Recycling Club and Environmental Club hosted a showing of Leonardo DiCaprio's documentary film Before the Flood. Club member Nora V. reports that over twenty Grier girls showed up to watch the movie and enjoy pizza. A brief discussion of what steps individuals, including Grier students, can take to prevent climate change and pollution followed the film.
On Saturday, February 11, freshman Rori K. and sophomore Lulu T. competed, along with Grier English teacher Mr. Tony Lang, in the 7th annual Milton Meltdown at a rock climbing gym in Milton, Pennsylvania.
Members of Grier's National Honor Society (NHS) led Grier in a school-wide celebration of "I am Beautiful Day" by featuring black and white photos of Grier students, teachers, and staff throughout the school, as well as, a special video. The video filmed reactions of students and faculty members as they were told, "Today we're filming things we find beautiful, and we just wanted you to know that you're beautiful."
On Tuesday, February 21st the Grier Foxes Fencing team participated in their last match of the season against rival team Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School in Altoona. While Bishop Guilfoyle won the match 12-8, Grier fencers had some noteworthy bouts. One such bout was Grier junior Nora V. versus her brother. For seniors Helen G. and Jessica Z., this was the final match of their high school fencing careers.
Grier's Model UN team traveled to Georgetown University for the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) where they represented the country of Switzerland. The team was also invited to visit the Embassy of Bahrain.
This weekend, Grier riders competed in the Zone 2 IEA Tournament as well as the Marshall and Sterling Schooling Show, both hosted this weekend at Grier School. Congratulations to our riders!
On Friday, February 10th, the entire Grier Junior class attended an NACAC College Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the fair, juniors had the opportunity to meet with representatives from hundreds of colleges and to attend workshops on various college selection and preparation topics.
The basketball team won their final game of the season 44-16 against Grace Prep School. Zehua led the team with 16 points, Masha had six points, and Abby had 5 points. Six other players scored as well. Congratulations to the seniors, Masha, Rachel, Cindy, Tricia, and Debbie on a great season. The team ended the year with 8 wins and 3 losses.
Members of the seventh and eighth grade class organized and operated their annual Valentine's fundraiser bake sale was held on Tuesday, February 14th, in the Grier Auditorium. Staff and students could purchase goods baked and donated by teachers and students.
On Friday, February 10th, the Allegria Ensemble performed at Grier in the Instrumental Music Building. This was an excellent opportunity for Grier students to hear and watch a professional string quartet up close.
As part of an assignment designed to encourage deeper understanding of literature, eighth grade students in Mrs. Daryl Smith's English class presented before their classmates on topics and themes from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
Congratulations to the Grier School Varsity Hunt Seat IEA team for winning high point high school team both days of a two-day IEA Hunt Seat competition of seventeen teams held right here at Grier! Plus, Grier's middle school team tied for reserve champion the first day and was champion of day two!
Along with Hunter/Jumpers, Grier's very active Riding Program also competes in Western Riding and Dressage events. Grier riders performed well at two recent competitions: an IEA Western showing at Alfred University and the Meredith Manor IEA Dressage show.
Grier's Varsity Basketball Team is dominating the court lately! Since their first game back in December, a loss against DuBois Christian School, the Lady Foxes have dramatically bounced back, racking up six wins in a row, including defeating DuBois at their rematch on December 30th!
As part of the English-Speaking Union of the United States' National Shakespear Competition, Grier students in grades 9-12 participated in school-wide competitive performances and recitations of Shakespeare monologues and sonnets. Participants enjoyed the experience. Grace W. won first, Katie S. took second, and Mary D. was our third place winner. Great job!
This weekend, Grier Archers Shannan L. and Lauren S. traveled with their coach Ms. Katt Barr to Johnstown, Pennsylvania to compete in the Windber Archers State Qualifier shoot. Lauren S. took first place in the girls overall group and Shannan L. received third place. Coach Barr couldn't be prouder.
Students at Grier come from all over the world and often delight in learning about each other's cultures and traditions. In honor of Lunar New Year, a group of students and Mrs. Harriet Grier arranged a special treat for the whole school to enjoy.
The Library and Empowering Girls Globally (EGG) Club partnered for a special One School, One Story event. Students and teachers gathered in the Library during Extra Help on to watch the TEDx talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the celebrated author of We Should All Be Feminists.
On Saturday, students participated in an Excursion Club trip to climb at the Milton Rock Gym, an indoor climbing gym in Milton, Pennsylvania. Students were guided and chaperoned by experienced climber, English teacher Mr. Tony Lang.
Audiences enjoyed Grier School's production of Arsenic and Old Lace, a classic dark comedic play about the murderous lifestyle of the insane Brewster family. The play was written by John Kettering and was made famous by the 1944 film adaptation starring Cary Grant.
Varsity archers Lauren S. and Shannan L. accompanied their coach Ms. Katt Barr on Saturday to the Annual Cardinal Clash of Archers where they competed against other area archers with their scores counting toward a state-level qualification.

Grier is excited to announce that our spring musical is the Tony-award nominated Broadway sensation Sister Act, based on the hit 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg.
As students returned to Grier from Winter Break, Grier was happy to host speaker Katie Koestner. Koestner is the Founder and Executive Director of Campus Outreach Services and Executive Director of the Take Back the Night Foundation. Her presentation to students at Grier, focused on Cyber Smarts and Digital Citizenship.
Students enjoyed observing a virtual night sky inside the StarLab Planetarium during Grier's December Lab Days. Science classes learned about the movements of the stars across the sky and historical interpretations of the stars' relative positions and associated constellations.
