Wolfpack Unites Grier in a Thoughtful Discussion

Earlier this year, the Library launched the 2019-2020 One School, One Story school-wide read. This program challenges everyone in the Grier community to read the same book as a shared experience. This year’s book selection was Wolfpack: How to Come Together, Unleash Our Power, and Change the Game by soccer legend Abby Wambach.
All members of the Grier community were welcome to join in a special all-school event in the Library during Extra Help last week. Librarian Mrs. Woolfrey opened the event by sharing a brief clip of a television interview with the book’s author and a segment of her Barnard College commencement speech that inspired the book’s publication.

The group learned a bit more about Wambach’s background, including her natural competitiveness and legendary soccer titles and awards. With 184 goals, the now retired gold-medal Olympian Wambach maintains the record for most goals scored in a career for both men and women’s national team soccer.

Participants discussed which of Wambach’s eight New Rules were the most meaningful to them and how they fit into both their Grier world and the world beyond Grier. After a very thoughtful and inspiring discussion, Mrs. Woolfrey celebrated their participation by awarding attendance prizes.  The participants walked away with Wolfpack book marks, beautiful vinyl stickers, and zippered pouches with artwork expressing the sentiment evoked by Wambach’s rule “Be FOR each other.”

Wolfpack was a great opportunity for Grier girls to tap into their individual power by reading what Olympic Gold Medalist Abby Wambach has to say about leadership, teamwork, and changing the world. Thanks to all for their participation in the 2019-2020 One School, One Story program. Copies of Wolfpack are still available in the Library, so stop by to borrow one any time!
