Global Celebration: 50th Anniversary of Earth Day

This April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, a day established to focus on issues impacting the environment. While the Grier community cannot celebrate the special day together in person by doing some of the usual activities, such as planting trees and spreading awareness of challenges to worldwide ecosystems, we can come together from afar to honor the earth.
For inspiration, listen to Wes Tank rap Dr. Seuss’ environmentally-conscious classic The Lorax over Beats by Dre. In the story, the Once-ler uses things only once and destroys the natural resources to make non-essential items. Meanwhile, the Lorax speaks for the trees, eventually stating that, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

Need some ideas for how to celebrate the Earth this year?  While following the public health guidelines in your community, you might try to:

  • Opt for reusable items and avoid single-use, disposable ones
  • Focus on a plant-based meals
  • Experience and appreciate nature
  • Share what you love about nature
  • Begin backyard composting
  • Read an environmentally-conscious book like Silent SpringTracking Trash, or We Are the Weathermakers.
  • Contact politicians and corporations to encourage them to make environmentally responsible decisions and policies
  • Listen to podcasts about the environment. Mrs. Forest suggests Living on Earth and The Overstory: A Sierra Club Podcast, especially the April 3 episode that featured an interview between Denis Hayes, Founder of Earth Day Network and Jamie Margolin.
  • Have a conversation with a friend or a relative about the ways in which this pandemic has helped the environment and what we can learn from that and apply to our lifestyles in the future.
Share what you are doing to help the earth with us at Grier and have a Happy Earth Day 2020!
