Students, faculty, and staff got into the holiday spirit for the annual Grier Thanksgiving Luncheon. On this day, the whole Grier community dresses up to enjoy a formal luncheon featuring Thanksgiving favorites, such as turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
This feast, prepared with care by Grier's amazing Kitchen staff, brings the Grier community together in the way it brings families across the United States together. It also allows our international students a chance to experience the U.S. holiday.
The Thanksgiving holiday celebrates the original harvest feast in 1621, where the pilgrims of Plymouth celebrated a bountiful harvest with many Native Americans of the Wampanoag tribe. Following the U.S. Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln decared a National Thanksgiving holiday would take place the last Thursday in November.
Modern United States citizens celebrate the day by gathering together with family and friends over dinners, watching American football, and watching parades, like the famous Macy's parade in New York City. The day after Thanksgiving has also become the unofficial start of the winter holiday season, with many folks choosing to get up early or face huge crowds to get the best prices on items they will later give as gifts.
At Grier, Thanksgiving luncheon was one of friends, family, and togetherness.
