Bridge Club Inspires Grier Girls to Help Girls. Period.
In honor of International Day of the Girl, Members of Bridge Club encouraged a school-wide drive to help women and girls who do not have access to basic feminine hygiene products. Students who donated unopened packages of pads or tampons received a free girl power button pin of their choice. Alternatively, students could donate money and receive one button for a $2 donation or three buttons for a $5 donation.
Bridge Club, formerly known as Empowering Girls Globally “EGG” Club, is where Grier girls learn about and celebrate the differences and similarities that make every culture beautiful and unique. After learning that 60% of women and girls in the developing world have no access to pads or tampons, Grier’s Bridge Club wanted to help by collecting donations and proceeds to the charity called Girls Helping Girls. Period.
In addition to this effort, Bridge Club sponsors and plans movie nights, food festivals, and off-campus cultural events to help unite the school. The reach of the club extends beyond Grier, helping girls around the world in various ways, which include this a SchoolCycle Fundraiser in the fall and the GirlUp 5K Walk/Run in the spring. History Department Chair, Mrs. Keri Salyards is the Bridge Club advisor. The motto of Bridge Club is “Discover, Listen, Accept, Empower.”
The buttons that girls earned through their donations celebrate women’s empowerment, and included slogans like “Behind Every Successful Woman is Herself,” “Stay Sassy,” “The Future is Female,” “Unite With Love, Resist with Love,” “Empowered Women Empower Women,” “Resist & Persist,” “Fight Like a Girl,” and “Girl Power.”
The drive raised enough money to supply five girls with feminine hygiene products for a whole year.and collected over a thousand pads and tampons. Like the messages on the buttons, Mrs. Salyards reminds Grier girls, “Women accomplish amazing things when we support each other.”
