Twelve Science Club students completed an entry into this year's online Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The machine had to open an umbrella in 20-75 steps. The Grier machine completed the task successfully in about 42 steps and did so with an international flair.
The girls decided to give the complex machine an international theme to reflect the diversity of Grier's student body. The machine begin in Asia with a Mt. Fuji erruption, the Great Wall of China, then went down to Africa's pyramids, and Australia where an Opera House boat sail to Europe. The leaning tower of Pisa toppled, the London Eye spun on to North America, land of hockey, pizza, Halloween, and Mickey Mouse. In the final step, a cowboy boot kicked open the umbrella.
The students mainly worked on this task during weekends and after school in January and February under the guidance of Mrs. Kelly Forest and Mr. Mark Van Horn, both of the Science Department.
