Grier Holds Mock Election

For weeks, students, teachers, and staff at Grier have been casting their ballots in the red and blue ballot box in Mrs. Keri Salyards' classroom. Mrs. Salyards teaches U.S. History and AP U.S. History to tenth grade students at Grier.

In the tradition of Family Circle, Mrs. Salyards will also host a Presidential Spouse Cookie Bake-Off contest on Election Day, November 8th.
During the mock election, voters could anonymously cast their vote for either of the two major party candidates (Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump) or write in a third-party candidate. Additionally, Grier voters could select from a list of issues which one was most important to them.

Mrs. Salyards tallied the ballots and announced the winner. In a landslide, Hillary Clinton received 72% of the votes, "Other" received 16%, and Donald Trump received 12%.  Popular write-in candidates in the "Other" category were Bernie Sanders and Michelle Obama. Grier voters felt that Civil Rights and Social Issues were what mattered most.

Mrs. Salyards believes this voting experience provides students with a hands-on demonstration of the election process and provides fodder for intelligent debate and discussion both in and out of the classroom.
