Ts for Bees NHS Fundraiser Benefits Heifer International
Grier's National Honor Society (NHS) is sponsoring a Teas/Tees for Bees fund raiser to raise money for the global hunger relief charity Heifer International through the sales of tea and t-shirts. This is a nod to NHS's previous cleverly-titled fund raisers "Totes for Goats," "Shirts for Sheep," "Tops for Crops," and "Pants for Plants."
For the Teas/Tees for Bees fund raiser, NHS members sold tins of tea blends and t-shirts featuring a bee design. The proceeds go towards Heifer International, for the purchase of honeybees for families in need.
How do honeybees help relieve world hunger?
According to information on the Heifer International website:
Honey is the only food that includes all the essential elements necessary to sustain life, including enzymes, vitamins, minerals and even water. Its unique chemical makeup also allows it to be preserved indefinitely.
In the process of searching for nectar, bees pollinate plants. The placement of a single colony can potentially double local fruit and vegetable yields.
Many farmers that keep bees are able to harvest honey during the non-growing season to earn extra income, producing 60 pounds or more of honey each year.
