Art Students Create a Mixed Media Masterpiece with Visting Artist
During the month of February, Grier's Art Department welcomed artist-in-residence, Felicia Frank. Frank worked with students in Grier's art classes to create mixed media artwork using acrylic paints, watercolor, and collage. These pieces culminated in a one-of-a-kind book greater than the sum of its parts.
Grier's February visitor, Felicia Frank, is new to the field of art education and currently works in a Cohasset, Massachusetts school, but she is a seasoned artist with a Masters of Art Teaching from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and BFA from Endicott College in Beverly Massachusetts, where she majored in Studio Art and double minored in Theatre and Education.
Frank describes her artwork on her website (www.feliciafrank.com). She writes that while her works look simply like brightly colored, abstract pieces, they are greatly influenced by her background in theatrical forms, and the color choices help describe the nuances and complexities of the individuals. She describes her portraits as not only a portrait of a friend or loved one, but a transformation of many units into a cast of characters. The idea of many parts equaling a greater whole is also what Grier students explored as they created individual pages that, together, formed a magnificent book.
Art Department Head, Mrs. Laurie Cave, believes the benefits of hosting visiting artists are plentiful. Working artists offer different perspectives, insights, and techniques. Additionally, these artists can offer information and encouragement to students interested in furthering their education and career in art.
