Recently, many Grier students had their first opportunity to see real pieces of the Moon. Earth Science teacher, Mrs. Christine Fernandes gave multiple presentations about the specimens which were collected from Apollo missions 14, 15, 16, and 17.
Her eighth grade students learned about the rocks during class time, while the whole school was invited to attend an after school presentation for Astronomy Club.
Additionally, Mrs. Fernandes coordinated with the local Tyrone-Snyder Public Library and Tyrone Elementary School to create a terrific volunteer opportunities for Grier students. After Mrs. Fernandes presentation at the public library, she and the student volunteers led lunar-themed crafts, games, and stories, and a rocket experiment.
Mrs. Fernandes received specialized training from a NASA-Goddard scientist to became authorized to handle and display the priceless moon rock samples.
