Mrs. Curtis Demonstrates Spinning
History teacher and knitting club advisor, Mrs. Abby Curtis, recently brought her spinning wheel to her Grier classroom to demonstrate the art of spinning wool fiber into yarn. During the Extra Help period, Mrs. Curtis demonstrated how to prepare the fibers and spin them with the wheel.
While anybody was welcome to checkout the spinning wheel, Mrs. Curtis brought it in specially for members of Knitting Club. Members of Knitting Club meet regularly during Extra Help to work on knitting and crochet projects, including hats made for charitable causes, such as for chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair as a side-effect to the treatment.
Mrs. Curtis also recently chaperoned a weekend field trip to the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, MD. This festival is the largest and longest-running showcase of domestic sheep and wool in the United States. In addition to providing information about sheep for farmers, the festival celebrates fiber arts and includes demonstrations of sheep shearing, multiple types of spinning, numerous methods of weaving, crocheting, and knitting, and a fashion show of finished wool garments. Amid all the sheep and wool related events, Grier students enjoyed live music, live animals, delicious festival food, and shopping the vendor stalls.
