Pottery Class Builds Primative Pit Kiln
Students in Mrs. Heidi Zimbler's Hand Building Pottery class used the double length periods during the last Lab Days of the 2016-2017 school year to create unique Pueblo-style pieces. To do this, the students built a primative style outdoor pit kiln near the Grier upper fields.
The students made coil built pots, burnished them with smooth stones and painted pueblo designs on them with clay slip. Then, the students placed their hand-formed pottery pieces into a metal cylinder along with sawdust. After the fire is ignited and the initial blaze subsides, the kiln is sealed with the lid and allowed to smolder for several days until the fire burns out entirely, baking the pottery in the process. The finished red clay pottery turns black from the carbon in the ash.
