Grier Physics teacher, Mrs. Kelly Forest, spent the 2016-2017 school year away from Grier, on a research sabbatical with her family. During her time away, Mrs. Forest was able to visit Paris, France, New Zealand, and Australia. From the photos she shared, Mrs. Forest must have loved every minute of the experience! Although she will miss the incredible opportunity she had to explore these amazing places and make new friends, Mrs. Forest is looking forward to returning to the classroom for Fall 2017.
Mrs. Forest writes:
What a journey I have been on with my family this year. I would first like to extend my thanks and gratitude to Grier for granting me a leave for the past school year so that I could join my husband, Chris, on his year long sabbatical from Penn State. Chris has spent this year working with different groups of scientists around the world to discuss his research on climate change and to discuss pertinent research questions in this area. I have spent this year learning French (unsuccessfully), exploring museums, climbing mountains, visiting glaciers and rainforests, swimming in the ocean and eating a lot of amazing food.
Even though I wasn’t teaching this year, I thought a lot of how my adventures would create discussion in my classroom next year. I’m excited to use my travels around the world to show that physics can be seen everywhere. Some of my many examples include timing the Foucault Pendulum’s period at the Pantheon, watching (from a distance) an avalanche at the Rob Roy Glacier in Mt. Aspiring National Park in the south island of New Zealand, viewing the stars in the Southern Hemisphere and the most recent, learning how to scuba dive. My classroom will be filled with all the photos I have taken over the year and each one will tell a story. I’m so grateful to Grier for this amazing opportunity and I’m ready to come back home to see everyone!
