Grier Celebrates Day of the Girl with Fundraiser for SchoolCycle
This week, Grier celebrated International Day of the Girl. This day is sanctioned by the United Nations and is observed around the world. It brings attention to issues of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide. Grier’s Empowering Girls Globally (EGG) club led the celebration by selling plain white t-shirts and hosting a t-shirt designing session during Extra Help.
In the EGG-led celebration, students and teachers purchased plain white t-shirts for $5, then proceeded to decorate their shirts with words and phrases that bring awareness to issues facing girls worldwide or that highlight the extraordinary things that girls do.
Proceeds from the fundraiser went to SchoolCycle, a program that provides bicycles to girls in developing countries so that they can have reliable transportation to school. This program was developed by the UN Foundation organization, GirlUp.
Thanks to generous donations from students and faculty, EGG collected enough money to send two bikes to girls in Malawi, a gesture that will allow them to attend school and change their life! EGG wishes to thank participants for their generosity and reminds everyone to save those shirts to wear on International Women’s Day in the spring. If you would like to make additional donations or purchase a white tee, there is still time. See or contact EGG club advisor, Mrs. Keri Salyards.
