Made by Hand: Knitting Club to Raffle Blanket
Members of Grier’s Knitting Club decided to make a blanket to benefit charity. It was Heather P. (’18) who proposed the idea of mitered squares to the club. Each knitter can create a 7”x7” mitered square, and then these squares can be sewn together into a blanket. The club plans to sell raffle tickets for the finished blanket, with proceeds benefiting a charity yet to be determined.
While the pattern for the mitered square is relatively simple, the biggest challenge is up to a dozen student knitters to knit at the same gauge so that the squares are all equally sized. The group began practicing with inexpensive yarn. Once they understood the pattern and were able to maintain the correct gauge, the knitters moved on to the good yard. The club selected a color scheme and yarn type, then the club’s advisor, Mrs. Abby Curtis, did the shopping.
In the past, the Knitting Club has created knitted hats for chemotherapy patients and donated them to local hospitals. Mrs. Curtis notes that last year, they took about 30 hats to Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania.
