Holiday Decorations: Beautiful and Sustainable

Evergreen plants have long been used to celebrate the winter time holidays. Evergreens remind us of the green leaves of spring and offers hope during a long winter. For this holiday season, Grier students created wreaths and beautiful mini holiday trees from natural and man-made materials.
During recent lab days, students in Mrs. Fernandes’ Integrated Science class created wreaths while learning about sustainability. “Sustainability” refers to using things from nature in such a way that we leave minimal impact on ecosystems. The girls made holiday wreaths out of greens, seed pods, feathers, dried flowers, and re-purposed items. Only the wreath frames, wire, and some ribbon were purchased. Mrs. Fernandes will re-use the wreath frames for future projects.

Members of Garden Club met with advisor Mrs. Fernandes on Saturday to assemble mini Christmas trees using cuttings from boxwood shrubs and floral design materials. The students placed stems of boxwood into floral foam, shaped the arrangement, and added decorations. These mini trees are perfect holiday centerpieces, and some students opted to give them as gifts to friends, family members, and resident advisors. The decorative components and containers can be saved and re-used again another year, while the greens are fully compostable.

The students created beautiful works inspired by nature. Great job!
