At Grier School, we are proud of our diverse student community and culture. This year it is our goal to highlight our Grier Girls in their own words. Our series, Meet Grier, introduces our students to our extended community while showcasing their achievements and stories.
MEET CHARLOTTE M. '22
Name: Charlotte M.
"Home" when you're not at Grier: Various parts of New York
Year: Junior
Years Attended Grier: 2
Age/Grade Started at Grier: 10th Grade
How Did you Decide to Attend Grier? I really admired the various performing arts programs at Grier, and when I came to visit everyone was so welcoming. I knew immediately Grier was where I was meant to be.
Why do you prefer the all-girls school environment? I’ve spent most of my life in all girls schooling environments. I’ve always felt safer, both physically and emotionally. I find it easier to focus on the things that are important to me.
Are you a member or officer of any clubs/organizations? I’m a member of the performance club and am currently working to get a new virtual volunteering club called GROW off the ground.
Do you participate in any Signature Programs or activities? Which and why do you enjoy them? I’m currently a part of Honours Choir and Musical Theatre, and before I went virtual I was also in various intermediate dance classes. I really enjoy the level of individualised attention to each student’s growth as an artist, as well as how supportive all the girls in these programs are too each other. The theatre program especially feels like my family within Grier.
What has been your favorite memory or story from your time at Grier? My favourite memory of my time at Grier is probably right after callbacks for James and the Giant Peach. another girl in theatre and I spent hours hanging out in the practice studios just talking and singing and waiting (very impatiently, haha) for the cast list to come out. This was about two weeks after I arrived and it was the first time I truly felt like a Grier girl.
What are you most excited about for this year? I’m really hopeful that there will still be a spring musical.
What is your favorite tradition at Grier and why?
Because of entering midway through last year only about a month before covid struck, I sadly haven’t had much of a chance to experience many Grier traditions. A tradition I look forward to getting to be a part of is the graduation ceremonies.
What advice or message would you share with future Grier Girls? Communication is key. Grier wants to support you in any way that they can, but they don’t always know how. If you can communicate your struggles and needs to the faculty, it will make your time at Grier 1000x better.
Just for fun - what is your favorite class, quote, book, recipe, movie, tv show, or podcast? My favourite class is definitely Musical Theatre II with Ginger!
